Thoughts and musings...

I thought these two books were great. Thank you to Sourcebooks for sending them to me in exchange for a review.

What I liked:

I enjoyed the humor. These two books take the Dummies series and turn it into a newly minted zombie survival manual. The charts where you try to control the urge to eat people you encounter in your day to day life were my favorite. Very clever.

The book and the workbook can be used with or without each other, but I found them to work great together. The workbook has tons of games to keep you busy. Yes. Tons. It may look thin, but the amount of different activities actually boggled my mind for more than a few minutes. Real thought was put into these books. They are really worth the time to read and enjoy if you like zombie books. (And of course you do. You're here aren't you?)

What I didn't:

Not a thing. They were great.

Overall impression:

The main book is a zombiefied Dummies book for the newly undead. It covers every possible scenario and is witty, snarky and incredibly funny even as you are learning how to co-exist with Girl Scouts and do the latest dance moves.

The workbook is just packed with all kinds of different games and activities. It challenges your mind, and keeps you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars for both the workbook and main book. Great job David Murphy for making me strain my brain. It hurts now! (Double thumbs up.)

Jess from Gone With the Words

Hi everyone! I’m Jess and I’m behind the “Gone with the Words” blog! I haven’t always been a reader, I was in Middle School (or Junior High to some of you), but lost interest in High School. It all changed in 2009 when I bought Twilight....and read it in a matter of hours. I then scrambled to get my hands on the rest of the series and didn’t leave my house all weekend. The rest is history. I was in love with books once again.

After reading about 200 books last year alone I decided to begin a blog where I could talk about them. Thus, Gone with the Words was born in January. At that time it wasn’t called that though, it was called “Read? Don’t Mind if I Do...” but wasn’t in love with that name. So I held a poll that included names suggested by other bloggers and Twitter friends, and that’s how I got the name for my blog. As for which genres I like, it’s evolving the more I read. I love Paranormal/Fantasy & Contemporary YA and Romance the most though. I also really like Urban Fantasy. If it’s a series, that’s even better.

Q. How did you come up with your blog name?

Mine is rather stupid. You see I tend to be that person that stuffs things together to make new and interesting things. Or just silly names - which seems to be trendy for the last decade especially with celeb names. So like, I was trying to choose what I wanted to be when I grew up and I said to myself:

"Well I like computers. Total computer dork. And I like art. So that makes me...the perfect Computer Graphic Designer!" That was random, but true.

How does this translate to a name...well I like paranormal stuff and I'm a book junkie, so...I shortened it changed the ie to ee...just for shits and giggles and viola' Parajunkee as a handle. Tack on the View because of course the blog is my opinion and there you have it. Parajunkee's View.

My answer:

When I was a kid nothing scared me more than zombies. Seriously. If Night of the Living Dead came on, I usually could be found scurrying back to my room to avoid even the hint of nightmare material. This, I am ashamed to say, lasted until my late twenties. Honestly, I am really not sure what changed my mind, but all of a sudden, zombie movies sort of started growing on me. Then came the books. Now, I am a confirmed addict. If you looked at my IPad, you would see zombies everywhere. Apps, movies, games, books, a work of fiction in progress. Yep. It's there. Now I am a book reviewer and of course I had to have a zombie blog with attack poodles and the works.

The funniest part about it...I came up with this blog on the same day I was obsessing about a cooking blog too. What can I say? I multitask with the best of them!

My answer:  In the days before my Nook, I would typically only read one book at a time.  Since I've acquired an e-reader, I typically have 2 books going at once - one on the e-reader that I can throw in the purse or take to the gym - and one in paper that I read at home.  Right now, I have 3 books going which is CRAZY for me - 1 book on the Nook, 1 book in PDF on my Netbook, and 1 book in paper!

My answer:

I have several books going at once. Usually one for each blog. Well, at least one. My YA blog is the heaviest right now with a mermaid series going on and some other books I am reviewing on a deadline. If I could strap on a futuristic device that let me read in my sleep, I would do it. For me, it is paper books, PDFs on my IPad and e-books on the Nook Color. Good afternoon zombie horde. I bring you good tidings and some very cool information on how you can keep your supieror status during a zombie apocolyptic outbreak. I mean, really...Who would I get to make me red velvet cupcakes if a stupid outbreak happens and all the people are gone. It's just depressing if you think about it like that. I mean, prepackaged cupcakes are okay, but even those have an expiration date.

It's all about controlling your urge to chomp. You can do it.

Zombie, Ohio: The Review

 The Verdict:

This book rocked my world. I could not put it down. To see a full description, see my earlier article with blurb from Goodreads.

What I liked:

Honestly, I loved this book for everything it was and wasn't. Peter, the main zombie character, was murdered and then he woke up as a zombie. The only difference is he could talk, reason and shoot your face off with a gun. Oh, and totally eat your brain.

Finding out who killed him and his adventures along the way make Peter one of my favorite zombie characters. Ever. In fact, if they made a movie out of this book, I would be there in line waving money for the IMAX screening. Yep. I would. (I don't go to the movies, people. But for this I totally would.)

What was different about this book:

Yes. You have zombies munching on brains. Sure. You have hordes decimating the countryside and military battles for regaining control. But you also have Peter directing traffic as it were, and trying to figure out how to help his girlfriend and kids find safety. What kind of zombie does that? A rational, thinking, feeling one. I actually cried on a couple of occasions. Laughed lots of times too. Peter the zombie. Love you man!

There was nothing not to like, unless you mind the occasional profanity and a bit of zombie gore.

5 out of 5 stars. If I could give 10 stars, I would. It was that good. So go out and support Scott Kenemore and let him know he needs to keep writing zombie books.

Question of the week:

Who are you "the person" as opposed to you "the blogger"?

My answer:

I am a Merchandise Manager at a very high volume B&N store.  It is a full time job and then some, but I love it. When I am not at work, I am a dog mom (dog slave) to 9 rescue dogs, 4 finches, 1 fish and 1 lizard. I am also a wife to my wonderful husband of almost seventeen years. When I am not keeping up with all of that, I am working on two YA novels, learning to knit and crochet and attempting to resurrect my exercise bike from underneath a pile of laundry. Most days I wish I had a maid. Some days I actually get to watch parts of a movie when I run past the TV. Go figure.

So yes, I have mastered the art of blogging and writing my books while getting my time in on the exercise bike (there is this awesome shelf on the bike), nuking dinner while rolling my hair in granny rollers and getting my husband's jeans ready in time for him to wear them to work when I get up at 4am to be at work before 7am. I blog over Cheerios. I read everywhere. Audio books are my friend. I need a tool belt for all of my electronic gadgets. Android phone. IPad. Nook Color.

Life is never dull. My life as a blogger started last fall. Social media in general started last April. I love it. Never have a felt more connected with book lovers and friends all over the globe. My job as a bookseller and the life of a book blogger mesh perfectly.  I get to talk about books day in and day out. What could be better than that?

So, now I have five blogs with differing subject matter, and am toying around with an idea for a sixth. But, to my husband's very real point, I need to get my books written. So, cross that New Year's resolution with the exercise bike that is staring me in the face and you have a woman that can really multitask.  Now, where is that coffee?

So, yes my little zombie horde, I may have a life outside the blog, but my heart belongs to you. Happy Follow Friday.

Good evening zombie horde. Today, while I was playing on the internet, I found a very awesome zombie site that you just have to visit.

Zombiesdrule. Quite simply, it rocks. They are on Facebook, Twitter and have their own web page. Complete with a shop for all kinds of toys, shirts and other very strange and cool things. They also rate and review the latest zombie games and apps. I now am sporting two new apps on my Ipad thanks to these awesome guys!

This book is keeping me turning the pages. More of a review will be forthcoming, as I get closer to the end of the book. Peter is a zombie to watch. The combination of his cluelessness, vulnerability and compassion is heart warming. At the same time you feel bad for him and all he has endured, he goes and eats a couple of sorority girls. Go figure.

I live for the mailman coming to my house with new stacks of books. For going to the library. For going to work at the bookstore, despite the tempation to chomp on snarky customers. But I don't. Chomp that is.

A Get Well Wish on Follow Friday

What embarrassing thing have you done on cold medicine?

I have to think about that. The weirdest thing I have ever done sleeping wasn't on cold medicine at all. It gives me nightmares, so I honestly hate to take the stuff. Unless it is prescribed. That's a horse of another color. Nope, the most embarrassing thing I can recall was waking up one morning with blood in my mouth and teeth marks on the nightstand/ small table that was next to the bed. I never did figure that one out. Still have the table though. Complete with teeth marks.

My favorite villian! Oh, I love that question. I have to say, recently that is is the girl in Let Me In. You know she is bad, but the boy in the story loves her and they need each other in the end. She kicks total butt when the bullies mess with him and I love that!!!
