Lizzie Borden Comes for a Visit

Lizzie Borden. Probable murderess. Definitely a celebrated and infamous character. This paper doll by the wonderful and creative Rhonda's Originals designs is a festive addition to any Halloween party. For sure a conversation piece. When I saw the design on her site, I knew I had to have it! My paper doll collection is growing. Yes, even zombies like to play. Especially with homicidal paper dolls. Note the ax. Just sayin!

The coolest thing about these dolls is that you take part in their construction. It is paper art, people. Fun, and inspiring, the dolls that you find at Rhonda's Originals are just that. Original. The digital file is sent to you, complete with all the how to's and if you have a problem, you have support through her site. Very cool. There is every kind of witchy and spooky wonder you could ever want. If Christmas is your thing, she has that too...

So check it out and let her know you saw Lizzie hanging out at Zombiegirl Shambling...Got to keep track of those ax wielding homicidal chicks.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOOK/AUTHOR

Linnet Ellery, the offspring of an affluent family dating back to Colonial times, is no stranger to the supernatural. Fresh out of law school, she’s beginning her career in a powerful New York “white fang” law firm. She has high hopes of one day making partner. But in a workplace where some humans will eventually achieve immense power and centuries of extra lifespan, office politics can be vicious beyond belief. When she’s assigned to a dead-end case with a dead-end boss, Linnet can only hope that she’ll be able to carve a place for herself within the entrenched hierarchy of the firm.

Then, for no reason that she can see, she become the target of repeated, apparently random violent attacks, escaping injury each time through increasingly improbable circumstances. For some inexplicable reason, her dead-end case is now worth her life. However, there’s more to Linnet Ellery than a little old-mone y human privilege. More than even she knows. And as she comes to understand this, she’s going to shake up the system like you wouldn’t believe…

THIS CASE IS GONNA KILL ME introduces a new type of heroine to urban fantasy, one who works within the system and not outside it, and uses the power of the law and her personal sense of justice to save the day.

1. What is your favorite thing about blending legal thrillers and the paranormal?

Figuring out how the presence of vampires, werewolves and elves would affect the shape and structure of the law.  Also finding a way to win using money and power rather than brute force.

2. What was the toughest scene to write in This Case Is Gonna Kill Me?

The sex scene.  I have this sense that sex is really only interesting for the participants.  Because seriously everybody looks and sounds kind of silly in the moment.  George R.R. Martin and I jokingly debate about this all the time.  He wants the sex scenes played out.  I want to cut to falling leaves, and swelling music,

3. I love Linnet's character and the world you have created. What inspired you to write this story?

When I looked at the urban fantasy landscape it seemed like what was missing was an analysis of how the halls of money and power would react to the presence of supernatural beings in our world.   Vampires were totally going to be controlling the levers of power behind the scenes.  I was curious what would happen it they were up front about their power and control.  And as I looked at werewolves I thought they'd make great bond traders, agents and soldiers.

4. Will there be more installments? (God I hope so!)

The second book, BOX OFFICE POISON is delivered and in the pipeline.  I need to start the third book

5. The play on women in the work force and vampire/were politics was very interesting. Especially the taboo on Making a woman into either supernatural Power, so to speak. Will a woman ever get made?

Not at this point, but things are about to happen to Linnet in the third book, and she will meet a _very_ old female vampire.

6. Do you write to music? If so, what?

I do.  For Linnet I tend to listen to my pop/dance playlist that is my workout music.  For my other books it tends to be more classical music.

7. Plotter or pantster?

Total plotter/architect.  I have a cork board and 3x5 cards, and the act outs and the major scenes all go up on the board.

8. Kickboxing or yoga

Both

9. Cheeseburger or sushi?

Both

I'm eclectic, what can I say?

10. What is next in your writing universe?

A big space opera.

 Overall:

What do you do when you are the new kid on the block at a legal firm and a girl to boot? Ramp it up by adding vampires, werewolves and some serious politics and you have a thriller that is going to keep you reading past the midnight hour, long after I should have been catching some sleep.

But you  know what...it was worth every second and I am waiting like mad for the second book to be released. Think Grisham meets Underworld. It rocks.

Linnet has been raised as a human in a vampire world. She knows the ropes and when she gets hired on at a prestigious law firm and a seemly dead end case, things start to go a little weird. Cranky werewolves and murder don't mix well with office politics. Neither does sleeping with one of the partners.

One of the things about this book that makes it unique is the blend of legal thriller and paranormal page turner. The intricate steps one takes in politics are upped when there is a murder at the firm and Linnet is put in the position of having to fight for her job and her life with compelling and humorous consequences.

The action is spot on here.  You won't find a better book with fight scenes that will have you pumping your fist in the air and screaming. The chase scenes are nail biters too.  The tension is palpable and  I could barely leave the book to go to work. It was painful to put it down because all of the characters became living breathing people I wanted to get to know. Linnet with all of her strengths and foibles is a person that fights for those she is loyal to. Fans of Kim Harrison books will love it.

This book is a 5/5. If I could give it higher, I would. It was an amazing foray into a world I want to see more of. Vampire gentry and all the levels of politics and traditions that make for an excellent world building experience. Complete thumbs up!

“What am I? You mean what sorority am I? Or—”
“No.” Jake crept forward until only three feet separated them. “I mean, what are you? Those three men…whatever they were—”
Emma let out the loudest, hopefully believable, fake laugh she could muster considering the circumstances. He’d seen everything.
Mind-wipe time.
“They were just drunk dudes, knocked me in—”
“No they weren’t. Look. It’s okay. I—things—I understand different.” Jake eyed the partially closed door across the room. “You can trust me.”
Emma huffed. Trust. Yeah, right. Two years ago, almost to the day, her life went bonkers. Strange things happened to her after the crash that killed her parents. She trusted no one, let alone a total and complete stranger.
No matter how drawn to him she felt.
He seized her wrist before she’d even registered he’d moved. Too distracted by his dominating presence in the small room.
She tugged at his grip, but he held fast.
Wait—was that warmth? He cuffed her wrist with his strong, able fingers. The same fingers that had caressed her spine so gently as she coughed half the pool from her lungs.
Damn water.
She hadn’t noticed any heat then, or when he had held her neck, maybe because of wet clothes and hair. But now, there was no clothing, no water to obstruct the direct skin-to-skin contact. It sent a dizzying heat up her forearm, over her shoulder and straight to her chest.
She’d not felt warmth—any fluctuation in temperature—in two years. Her lungs tightened, forcing her to take small gasps for air. God she missed heat. She missed cuddling. Missed human touch.
And he wasn’t even asking about her cold skin.
Probably assumed it was from the water. Didn’t matter. She let the tension roll out into his grip and absorbed the sensual feelings penetrating her barriers. Just for a minute.
“Interesting tattoo.” He turned her hand, exposing her wrist.
Damn, she’d lost her watch in the water!
He stood so close his breath whispered against her cheek. How could she smell a heady, earthy scent emanating from him through the chlorine saturating his clothing and hair?
“Does it mean something?” he asked.
Emma shook her head, too lost in his touch heating her blood to verbalize a response. Not that she’d tell him it identified her as a Hunter, a protector with kick-ass powers. Or that it appeared on her skin overnight, while she lay in a hospital bed after the crash two years ago.
With his free hand, he traced the arrow, and Emma’s legs morphed into wet noodles. She leaned against the desk, not having realized she’d backed up so far. Thankfully she had, because it kept her vertical.
What was happening to her?
His finger followed the pulsing blue vein to the crook of her elbow, up her arm until his hand cupped her shoulder, all the while, he held her wrist tight with his other hand. His already nearly black eyes darkened as the pupils ate up the dark irises. His gaze shifted, and his tongue moistened his plump, completely lickable bottom lip.
The heat that’d ignited in her heart suddenly pooled in her belly—very low in her belly.
He leaned forward, mouth only inches from hers. Even his breath on her lips was warm. Amazing. How could she feel warmth with his touch when she couldn’t with any other person?
Need more.
“I saw how strong you were. How you fought them off.” He stepped into her. “And this tattoo. I’ve seen it before.”
Oh, God.
“It’s a symbol of power. Apollo and Artemis.” His voice went husky.
“How do you know that?”
“I know a lot, Emma.” His hand followed the curve of her shoulder until he caressed the nape of her neck. “Why’d you pick this mark to put on your skin?”
A wave of heat stormed through her. “I didn’t choose it.” Emma licked her lips in anticipation. “Woke up with it two years ago.”
She stretched toward him, and the softest, warmest lips met hers. He tensed, probably at the cool temperature of her skin, but she didn’t care. She only craved his warmth. His touch.
So long she’d been without.

A Stiff Kiss Virtual Tour

A Stiff Kiss
Avery Olive

Genre: Young Adult Paranormal Romance

Publisher: Crescent Moon Press

ISBN: 978-1-937254-33-9
ASIN: B0075M4KA2

Number of pages: 248
Word Count: Approx. 68,000

Cover Artist: Taria Reed

Book Description:
Who knew kissing a corpse would change everything?

Death always hits Xylia Morana too close to home, but she likes it that way. She hangs out with the terminally ill, attends random funerals, and every so often, when the weather is right, she sleeps in open graves.

But after Landon Phoenix, the high school hottie, dies in Xylia's arms, she sneaks into the morgue to say goodbye. How could she know stealing a kiss from his corpse would wake him up?

With Landon returned to the living and suddenly interested in Xylia, life has new meaning. But what Xylia doesn't realize is that by kissing Landon back to life, she's thrown Life and Death off balance. The underworld demands a body, and it might just have to be Xylia's this time.

Short Excerpt:
No way should I be in the morgue. If I'm caught, I'll lose my job. My dad will probably get fired, too. He's been warned to keep me out of here.
The walls are lined with thick, square doors, clearly marked with numbers. I stop in front of the one I want. In the middle of that wall, at waist height, is number twelve. Beyond the door, lying on a sliding metal table, is the body of Landon Phoenix.
I've always had a crush on Landon, ever since freshman year when his family moved to Silver Springs. I've watched him grow into his looks, no longer a gangly boy with braces. And I've longed to hear my name roll off his tongue in that deep voice of his. To press my lips against his as he holds me in a tight embrace. To share the same air as him.
Though now, all those things are impossible. Except one. I can pull open the door, slide the table out, and at least for a moment I can share the same air, even though his lungs can no longer pull in that air.
I hesitate, my hand on the handle. Besides my mother, this will be the only other person who's died that I've really known. The others have just been people, random ones at that. The guy from the grocery store who jumped off Whibley Bridge into the icy waters below, the occasional patient of mine who'd succumbed to old age, and many, many others. But this is personal. This is someone I'd known. Or at least, someone I'd held secretly in my heart.
But I need to say goodbye.

The Character Interview:

Today I’ve decided to let my characters, Landon and Xylia, from A Stiff Kiss do the talking. They’ve come up with some questions to ask each other without giving too much away. I’ve given them strict rules of not giving any spoilers!
So, Xylia and Landon, the floor is all yours...

Since it’s courtesy to allow ladies to go first, Xylia you can have the first question.

Thanks, Landon. Very kind of you. I have to ask, how come you only noticed me after I brought you back to life?

Wow, you sure know how to make a guy squirm. Let’s be honest here, shall we. I totally, without a doubt, noticed you before you brought me back to life. How could I not, I mean you’ve got these amazing green eyes and silky, long black hair, and that body... There was just always, sort of, something in the way.

Yeah, your girlfriend Charity.

Right. Be she’s out of the picture now. My turn. If you had to pick a song for us, describing our situation over the course of our novel, what would be it be?

Easy. Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. It describes everything perfectly.
You sure look proud of yourself but you’re right. That song totally rocks. Our first kiss was... different. Okay, sort of gross. What was going through your head when you decided to kiss a dead guy? I mean, not that I’m not grateful, because I am... but really, a dead guy?

It’s not like a planned on it! It just... sort of happened. You looked so peaceful—
I was dead.
You were, but you still looked peaceful. Like Sleeping Handsome, and something just sort of came over me, like I had to kiss you, like my life and yours depended on saying goodbye with a peck on the lips.

That’s sweet, but you still kissed a dead guy.

You weren’t really dead. So it doesn’t count. What’s your favourite scene from the novel?

You mean besides having a total hottie kissing my dead lips? Seeing you as you. I think part of what I noticed before I died was how closed off you were. So, all those times when you were simply being you, not caring about who was looking or how you were acting. You were just free. Did you have any regrets?
About kissing a dead guy? No, not so much. About how I treated my dad in the novel, yeah, I’m still feeling pretty bad about how childish I was. I don’t think I noticed how much of a brat I was being until it was almost too late. But things are good now. We’ve both forgiven each other!

Yeah, I totally scared the crap out of my Moms with that little stunt we pulled—
Shh! No spoilers!

Right, sorry. Okay, so if I was totally rich and could take you anywhere in the world, where would we go?

Transylvania, of course! I have to know if Dracula is real and I bet they have some awesome creepy cemeteries to check out.

You know, I still think I have creepy crawlies crawling inside my brain from the last time you wanted me to explore a cemetery.

You do not! Bugs don’t craw inside your ears. That’s just silly. But if Transylvania isn’t your cup of tea, and clearly, judging by how you screamed like a girl... *cough* Anyways, where would you go if you a tons of money and could take us anywhere?

Venice. I don’t think there’s anything more romantic than taking a gondola ride along the canals.

Sure. Unless of course boat rides make you queasy. Then again, I’ve never been on a boat, so, who knows, we could be pretty safe. So, where do you see yourself in, oh, say, five years?

Well, since soccer is sort of out of the picture. I’m thinking... teacher. It’d be the best of both worlds. I could teach soccer instead of play it and well, I could corrupt the minds of young children. How about you? Is medical school in your future?

Maybe. It’s too soon to tell. I wouldn’t be a doctor doctor, like my dad. I think I’d lean more towards therapist. I’d like to help kids with similar problems like I had.

You mean, the kissing dead people thing? ‘Cause, yeah, I think anyone that does that needs therapy, for sure!

Are you ever going to get over that? I SAVED your life! I kissed you and brought you back. You wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for me!
Oh, c’mon, it’s funny.

No, what’s funny is getting dumped after doing... you know... in the janitors closet. You know what that says about your... uh... performance, right?
Oh, that’s low. Charity dumping me had nothing to do with that. Alright, I think we’ve got time for one more question. What do you say, Xylia, you wanna give the readers out there a hint about what are novel is about?
That’s not really a question, but sure. If you like sleeping beauty tales with a slightly morbid twist, well, our novel A Stiff Kiss is for you! Because, you better believe, kissing that corpse changed my life in more ways than I can count.

You do know that a Stiff... is, well... Anyways, the Stiff is me, and yup, I get kissed and come back to life. There’s some creepy stuff, and some romantic stuff and some totally weird stuff. I’d say it’s a pretty well rounded novel.
Well rounded it is. So pick up your copy today! It’s available in e-formats and paperback.

You sound like an infomercial, you know that, right? You don’t want to be pushy. Let those readers come to us.

Right. Come to us readers! And thanks, for sticking around and reading Landon’s answers, which weren’t near as good as mine.

They were just as good as yours and you still kissed a dead guy!

Alright, alright, that’s enough from you two. Thanks so much for playing along. And Landon, leave Xylia alone. Would you rather her run around kissing other guys? ‘Cause she’s right, the only reason you’re in the novel, A Stiff Kiss is because she kissed you. I’m sure I could go back and rewrite a few things if you can’t handle the responsibility.

No, no. That’s okay.

It better be, because without you the novel would just be me, running around kissing other guys and hanging out in cemeteries... hey, wait, that sounds pretty good, Avery? Maybe we should do a rewrite...

No rewrites. I like the story just the way it is! You two better just play nice or maybe *gasp* I’ll just write a sequel and take away your happily ever after.  Uh huh. That’s what I thought. So, to mimic what Xylia’s already said, thanks so much for stopping by!

Book Description:
Emily VonPeer hopes that she never meets the man of her dreams. For years, she's been haunted by visions of an unknown lover destined to die in her arms. When her aunt's death brings her home to her family's estate in Upstate New York, she meets Nicholas Flynn, an agent of Paladin, an enterprise dedicated to the study and eradication of demons, and the hero of her nighttime fantasies. He arrives on her doorstep seeking answers for a slew of magically-related murders tied to the VonPeer family.
Although his intentions are suspect, Emily follows Nicholas into the investigation, hoping to spare him the fate promised by her premonitions - at least, that's what she tells herself. When their exchange with a demon goes awry, Emily sustains an injury that threatens to turn her into a monster. Her transformation places her in the crosshairs of sorcerers, senators, and a seductive stranger who promises eternity.

Short Excerpt:

Emily watched from the kitchen window as the lights from the far shore played on the waves of the river. She heard the ghost of a voice whisper to her, but she ignored it. The voice would wait until morning. Maybe the sunlight would settle her, stop the spinning in her soul from the flight, the funeral, and the horrible ache that came from the realization that for the first time in her life, she was truly alone. Even the moon had abandoned her, its thin light concealed by the clouds overhead. She rubbed the bridge of her nose, willing the loop of events to stop flashing through her mind, yet the pictures remained sharp as blades, begging her to remember, to fight, to avenge. But she didn’t know how or where to start. She only knew why. A single word popped into her mind.

Even now, the idea pulsed like blood in her head, but there was nothing that she could do. Someone had stolen the only thing that mattered from her, and at twenty-six years old she was, once again, an orphan.

It’ll be better in the morning, she thought.

She pulled the edges of Aunt Maeve’s bathrobe closer; it was a shade too tight across the shoulders. She went to bed searching her mind for a shred of meaning or a moment of significance to light her path. All she found was a memory.

 The Two “Oh’s” in Paranormal
By Agnes Jayne
No, you didn’t read that wrong. The word paranormal does not actually contain two “O’s.”  I’m talking about the reaction you get when you tell people about the book that you’ve just written.  The two “Oh’s” of paranormal.
Allow me to explain. There are generally two types of reactions I get when I tell people about my novel, The Problem with Power.  My title is a bit deceptive, so the book could be anything from a political analysis to a…well….a paranormal romance.   People are generally excited to hear it when they find out that I’ve written a book, but it’s the next part of the conversation that always gives me pause.
The next question that people ask is “What kind of a book is it?”
 I tell them it’s a paranormal.
The universal response: “Oh!”
The first kind of “oh” is my favorite. It is generally a positive, excited response. It usually comes from a fellow book-loving, Dr. Who watching, geek-speaking, gamer-style reader like myself.  It’s the “Oh, I’m delighted that you said that” kind of word. The “Oh-I-will-certainly-read-it.” The “Oh, maybe I’m not alone in the world.”  It’s the type of word that you can hang your hat on, definitely the type of word that inspires me to bang out another story about a lovable nerd who conquers the world.
The second kind of “oh” is different. It comes from family members, people I used to go to church with, and other random grown-ups whose hopes remain high that I might yet make something good out of my life.  The “Oh, that’s not my style.”  The “Oh… well good luck with that.”  The “Oh, at least it’s not pornography.”  That “oh” stinks.  It makes me question my choices in life; it makes me wonder if I should have gone to law school instead.
So I guess I’d like to use this post as an opportunity to say thank you to the first crowd, the crowd of people that I write for. Thank you for the positive reaction and the possibility that you might read my book.  I hope that it pulls you out of the normal world for a few hours, because let’s face it, the opportunity to be a superhero in a parallel universe filled with monsters is a pretty awesome experience.  My response to you is: “Oh, I’m so glad you bought it. Oh, I’m really glad that you read it. Oh, I hope that you enjoyed it; and Oh, thank you for taking the time to listen to my little rant.”
